The Florida Bar’s Public Interest Law Section (“PILS”) has established an award to recognize outstanding achievement in advocacy for the homeless in honor of distinguished attorney and advocate Jane Hunter Shaeffer, who died in September 2009.

The Jane Shaeffer Outstanding Homeless Advocate Award will be given biennially by PILS to an individual who, through policy advocacy, direct service, litigation or otherwise, has meaningfully improved the conditions or treatment of homeless persons, either locally or throughout the State of Florida. The Award will be open both to members of The Florida Bar and to non-members.

About Jane Hunter Shaeffer

As the first statewide Director of the Florida Guardian Ad Litem Program, much of her professional life focused on Dependency Law; however, much of her volunteer work centered on working with homeless persons. In 1987, Shaeffer was one of the founding Board Members of The Shelter, an emergency shelter in Tallahassee, and in 2003, Shaeffer founded the Committee on Homelessness of the Public Interest Law Section of The Florida Bar.
