Final Florida Insurance Consumer Advocate Emergency Medical Transportation Working Group Meeting October 31, 2017

Oct 24, 2017

Florida Insurance Consumer Advocate Sha’Ron James will host the fourth and final Emergency Medical Transportation Working Group meeting on October 31, 2017 in Tallahassee.

The Insurance Consumer Advocate formed the 13-member Working Group in October 2016 to study the impact of emergency medical transportation costs to Florida insurance consumers.

In a news release issued today, October 24, 2017, the Insurance Consumer Advocate explained that members of the Working Group represent different perspectives and include regulators, providers, consumer representatives and government partners.

“Over the past year, I have had the opportunity to hear from a variety of stakeholders regarding ground and air emergency medical transportation services in Florida,” Ms. James added. “I look forward to moving the discussion forward by making policy recommendations that will ultimately protect consumers from suffering financially after recovering from an emergency medical event.”

Scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. (ET) the October 31 final meeting is expected to include public testimony, as well as conclude discussions on Florida’s emergency transportation services and challenges in protecting the insurance consumer.  Members of the public will be invited to share their experiences and concerns about air and ground emergency medical transportation services and other related insurance coverage issues.

“Florida consumers may be shocked to learn that many air and ground emergency medical transportation services are often considered out-of-network by their healthcare plans, and they owe several hundred or, in some cases, thousands of dollars for the use of the service,” the release explained.  “The Office of the Insurance Consumer Advocate anticipates releasing its findings and recommendations by the end of the calendar year.”

An agenda will be published on the Emergency Medical Transportation Working Group Web page, which includes a roster of Working Group members.
