Department of Health makes re-organization plans

The Florida Department of Health began outlining a potential reorganization plan Tuesday that could lead to moving and consolidating divisions within the agency, reports the News Service of Florida.

Deputy Secretary Kim Berfield presented an overview of the plan to the House Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee. Some House leaders began seeking major changes at the department in 2010.

One already-approved change took effect this week, with a program that regulates drugs, medical devices and cosmetics moving from DOH to the Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

The plan that Berfield outlined would involve moving divisions and employees within DOH. She said it could affect 1,253 employees, though that total includes people who would be transferred within the department.

She said she did not think a lot of employees would lose jobs, as DOH also has about 800 vacant positions.
