Governor Rick Scott Taps Ken Detzner as Secretary of State
Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, Governor Rick Scott named Kenneth W. Detzner to serve as Florida’s Secretary of State. He will continue the standard set by Secretary Kurt Browning of overseeing orderly, fair and error-free elections and ensuring Florida’s elections system is secure and defended from fraud.
“Kurt’s dedicated service and hard work with Florida’s 67 independently elected Supervisors of Elections have prepared our state for the presidential primary later this month,” Governor Scott said. “I am confident that Ken’s experience and ability to solve problems will continue our state’s record of fair elections for all Floridians.”
With over 30 years of management experience in the private sector and state government, Detzner previously served as Chief of Staff for Secretary of State Jim Smith from 2002 to 2003. He was appointed by Governor Jeb Bush to serve as Secretary of State during the Department of State’s transition from an independent agency operating under an elected officer of the Florida Cabinet to a Governor’s agency.
Since 2002, Detzner has been a governmental affairs and management consultant, maintaining a long-term relationship with the Collins Center for Public Policy. He has been involved in creating foreclosure and hurricane insurance mediation programs. He also advised the Florida Attorney General’s Office on ways to speed up the claims process for businesses that experienced losses resulting from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
A graduate of Florida State University, Detzner’s understanding of corporate issues is shaped by his experience as executive director of the Florida Beer Wholesalers Association for 13 years. He managed the organization’s efforts to address regulatory and public policy issues at both the state and federal levels.
During his six years as director of legislative and policy affairs for the Attorney General’s Office, Detzner worked directly with issues relating to state antitrust laws designed to protect consumers from various forms of fraud.
