Reuters reported this morning, June 17, 2015, that the California Labor Commission has ruled Uber drivers are employees, not independent contractors as the company had claimed.

Vox Media, which also carried the story, speculated that the ruling could be a serious threat to Uber’s business model, which relies on maintaining a flexible workforce that sets its own hours and doesn’t receive employment benefits.

The ruling emanated from a San Francisco-based driver who had filed a complaint with the California Labor Commission arguing that Uber must reimburse her for thousands of dollars in expenses she incurred as a driver.

Colodny Fass will provide additional details on this development as they become available.
