Former state House member Perry McGriff, a Gainesville insurance agent, will file this week to run against Republican Sen. Steve Oelrich, R-Cross Creek, McGriff announced Monday. McGriff, a Democrat, served in the House from 2000-2002 and is also a former member of the Gainesville city commission and Gainesville mayor. Democrats have put a target on Oelrich’s District 14 seat, which has a Democratic majority in registration. McGriff ran for the seat in 2006 but lost in the Democratic primary to former Rep. Ed Jennings, who then lost to Oelrich.
