Colodny Fass Managing Partner and Shareholder Joel Fass was honored by Jewish Family Service of Broward County for his pro bono legal support of domestic abuse victims.

Mr. Fass, who was bestowed with the “2010 Ending Abuse Award” at the October 17, 2010 Jewish Family Service’s fifth annual “KOLOT” event, will use his recognition to urge advocacy of shared gender responsibility in maintaining domestic tranquility among families in the Jewish community.

“Cohesive, functional families free of domestic abuse are integral to any community, regardless of religion,” Mr. Fass explained. “In the Jewish community, however, maintaining family harmony is considered to be especially important.”

In addition to over three decades of experience as a trial lawyer and prosecutor, Mr. Fass has worked directly with many of the foster care-related cases for which Colodny Fass is nationally known.

Mr. Fass, who practices in the areas of civil rights, personal injury law and commercial litigation is widely respected in South Florida for his hands-on community involvement.   A former member of the Broward County Charter Review Commission, he also founded Presidents’ Fest in the Park, an annual event that has raised substantial funds for local family-centered non-profits.  He also has served as past president of the Broward Area Agency on Aging Board of Directors, among other ongoing leadership positions.

Since 1999, the KOLOT coalition has served to raise awareness, promote education and increase services for victims of domestic abuse in the Jewish community.

The Sunday, October 17 event was held at the Signature Grand in Davie.  Proceeds supported the Jewish Family Services’ Domestic Abuse Program, which includes a crisis line, counseling, case management and support groups, as well as short-term and transitional housing.
