Irene not stopping Citizens from writing insurance policies

Homeowners looking to make changes to their Citizens policy or take out a new policy still have time. The state’s No. 1 property insurer will not suspend writing policies or accepting payments unless the National Weather Service declares a Tropical Storm or Hurricane Watch for any part of the state.

Insurance carriers may set their own rules about when to suspend writing policies if Hurricane Irene or another storm is headed our way. There’s no state statute that governs it, according to the state Department of Financial Services.
