Florida Insurance Commissioner Expresses Support of Surplus Lines Glitch Bill to Governor

Jun 11, 2009

Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty sent a letter to Florida Governor Charlie Crist today, June 11, 2009, in which he expressed support for the passage of House Bill 853 relating to Surplus Lines Insurers.

In the letter, a copy of which is attached for your review, Commissioner McCarty states that passage of HB 853 “would help Florida retain an indispensable property insurance product while preventing the likely collapse of the surplus lines market resulting in many more policies ending up in Citizens [Property Insurance Corporation].”

HB 853 provides that Chapter 627, F.S. does not apply to surplus lines insurers unless specifically stated, and is effective upon becoming law.

Governor Crist has until Monday, June 15, to sign the bill into law, veto the bill, or allow it to become law without his signature.
