First of Three Florida Senate Committees Approves Personal Injury Protection Repeal

Jan 10, 2018

A repeal of Florida’s Personal Injury Protection (“PIP”) insurance requirement could be on the horizon as the Senate Committee on Banking and Insurance approved SB 150 by a vote of 10 to 1 today, January 10, 2018.

Sponsored by former Senate President and current Republican candidate for Florida’s Chief Financial Officer Tom Lee, SB 150 would repeal PIP, which is also known as the “No-Fault” law.  HB 19, the House companion, is scheduled to be heard on the House Special Order calendar tomorrow.

After listening to over an hour of amendments, public testimony and debate, Senators passed SB 150 as a committee substitute.

Senator Doug Broxson registered today’s lone “nay” vote for CS/SB 150, which would repeal the current $10,000 mandatory PIP law and require drivers to buy two new coverages: $20,000 per person/$40,000 per occurrence bodily injury insurance, which increases to $30,000/$60,000 over three years; and $5,000 of medical payments insurance, a provision largely designed to benefit hospitals and physicians.

SB 150 must next pass the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, and then the Appropriations Committee before reaching the Senate Floor.
