According to reliable sources close to the state House leadership, controversy-plagued state House Speaker Ray Sansom will step down as speaker today, to be replaced by Speaker Pro Tem Larry Cretul.

The sources said members of the House leadership team have been working with Sansom to plan an orderly transition under which Cretul would fill the remainder of Sansom’s term, serving as speaker in the coming legislative session and the 2010 session.

The planned succession of House speakers would then continue—Dean Cannon, followed by Will Weatherford.

Under the agreement, Sansom could return to finish his term as speaker if he were vindicated.
