Founded in 1976 by Mike Colodny and Joel Fass, the firm began with a focus on banking law and the formation of financial institutions. As Florida’s economy expanded, so did Colodny Fass, quickly becoming a trusted advisor to insurers, financial institutions, trade associations, and businesses navigating complex legal and governmental issues.
A defining moment came in 1992, when Hurricane Andrew reshaped South Florida and the statewide insurance market. The firm’s work in the aftermath of the storm marked a new era, expanding its focus into insurance regulation, public policy, and catastrophe response. That same year, Mike Colodny was appointed General Counsel of the Florida Residential Property and Casualty Joint Underwriting Association (later Citizens Property Insurance Corporation), where he helped secure billions in catastrophe funding to stabilize Florida’s property-insurance market.
As the firm grew, it established its Tallahassee office in 1995, strengthening its legislative and executive-branch advocacy capabilities. In 2015, Colodny Fass relocated its headquarters to Sunrise, Florida, where it continues to represent clients statewide and nationally in litigation, corporate and transactional matters, and governmental consulting.

As Colodny Fass marks its 50th anniversary, the firm remains guided by the principles that defined its founding. What began as a small Florida practice focused on banking law has become a statewide leader in insurance, corporate, litigation, and governmental consulting.
