Florida’s Political Landscape Following the 2026 Election

The November 3, 2026, midterm elections represent another significant chapter in Florida’s evolving political landscape, offering important insight into the state’s political priorities, voter sentiment, and the shifting dynamics of power in Tallahassee and Washington. This election provided an interesting view of the political environment heading into the next legislative cycle and the 2028 election cycle. Voter turnout, regional voting patterns, campaign messaging, and emerging political coalitions influenced the results and should be considered as we evaluate strategy for the near future.

Republicans held every statewide office on the ballot, but by much thinner margins than the state’s recent history would suggest. Republican Byron Donalds will succeed term-limited Ron DeSantis, after beating Democrat David Jolly for governor by a margin of 50.1 percent to Jolly’s 48.7 percent. Republicans held the remainder of the Cabinet posts and the majority in the Senate and the House, but Democrats gained seats in both legislative chambers. In the House chamber, in particular, the Democrats flipped enough districts to overturn the Republican’s 2/3 supermajority, which gave the Republicans the sole power to waive rules and override Governor vetoes without any help from the minority party.
