Used Tire Amendment to Senate Bill 1272

Apr 8, 2014

Dear Coalition Members:

Senator Evers filed a Used Tire Amendment #871096 to Senate Bill 1272.  While this bill attempts to promote good public policy, there are several unforeseen negative effects that have not been taken into consideration.  The term “unsafe tire” is misused in the bill. The current definition is one that is used and recognized by our industry in several states as a “scrap tire”.  Prohibiting the sales of scrap tires creates a disservice not only to the state, but also to businesses that handle tires whether new, used or scrap and those that depend on that resource to continue to develop innovative ways for alternative tire uses.  Instead of prohibiting the sales of scrap tires that do not meet the standards of a used tire, the installation of such tires should be prohibited. As part of their day-to-day business, tire installers are professionally trained to identify the criteria’s listed in the bill and should not install such tires.

This Amendment will be heard in the Senate Transportation, Tourism and Economic Development Appropriations Committee tomorrow, April 9, 2014 at 9:00am.  We urge you to reach out to your local Senators by phone or email and ask them to VOTE NO on Senator Evers Used Tire Amendment #871096 to Senate Bill 1272.

I will be sending emails to Senators on the Transportation, Tourism and Economic Development Appropriations Committee on behalf of the Coalition, should you not want your name included please reply to me (cschwarz@cftlaw.com) and I will remove your name from our list.

Should you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for your support.
