State Rep. Stan Mayfield has died after battling cancer for more than a year. He was 52.

House Speaker Marco Rubio informed Florida lawmakers of Mayfield’s passing Tuesday evening.

Mayfield was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in early 2007. Months of chemotherapy sessions brought the disease under control, but the cancer recently returned, causing Mayfield to enter hospice care.

The Vero Beach Republican was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000. Most recently, he served as chair of the Environment & Natural Resources Council and the Legislative Budget Commission. In August, he was elected tax collector for Indian River County.

Mayfield was married with three sons.
