TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A Florida senator wants to give residents preference over out-of-state workers for construction jobs funded by state and local governments.

Sen. Dan Gelber, D- Miami Beach, presented his proposal Wednesday to the Senate Commerce Committee.

The panel also heard from a union official who supported a bill Gelber has filed that would require employers to search longer for U.S. job applicants before hiring temporary foreign workers.

Gelber is seeking the Democratic Party nomination for state attorney general.
