Florida Office of Insurance Regulation Announces Expanded Role of Deputy Chief of Staff to Include Government Affairs

Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty announced today, October 5, 2012, that, in an expansion of her current role, Deputy Chief of Staff Rebecca Matthews will direct the OIR’s Government Affairs initiatives.

Office Announces Expanded Role of Deputy Chief of Staff to Include Government Affairs

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty today announced that Rebecca Matthews will direct the Office’s Government Affairs initiatives, which includes both Legislative and Cabinet Affairs. Ms. Matthews currently serves as the Deputy Chief of Staff; her new Government Affairs role is an expansion of her current duties.

“I have had the pleasure of working with Ms. Matthews in her capacity as Deputy Chief of Staff to handle complex issues affecting the Office; she has the necessary experience and knowledge to seamlessly transition into her new role in Government Affairs,” stated Commissioner McCarty. “I am confident Ms. Matthews will combine her leadership abilities with her understanding of the Office’s operations to effectively represent our views with Florida’s policymakers on the best strategies for improving the insurance marketplace.”

As Deputy Chief of Staff since 2008, Ms. Matthews has had primary oversight of the Market Research and Technology business unit and served in an advisory role to the Chief of Staff for agency operations.  Ms. Matthews will continue to perform these functions while assuming her new role directing the Office’s Government Affairs outreach.

Prior to joining the Office, Ms. Matthews served as legislative affairs director for both the Florida Department of Management Services and the Florida Lottery. She has also served in lead communications positions, including as Vice President of Communications at the Florida Bankers Association. Ms. Matthews received her Bachelor of Science degree in Communications from Florida State University with a minor in Political Science.
