Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty is being recognized by the Florida Association for Insurance Reform (“FAIR”) at its third annual awards dinner in North Miami tomorrow night, September 17, 2015.

FAIR is bestowing Commissioner McCarty with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his 27 years of public service.

Commissioner McCarty made history when he became the first non-elected insurance commissioner for the State of Florida.  He is known as a champion for consumers and a stabilizing force in Florida’s property insurance market, as well as for balancing consumer protections with the need to return Citizens Property Insurance Corporation policyholders to the private market and reduce the risk of additional assessments for all Floridians.

Under his leadership, Florida has seen workers’ compensations rates drop more than 50 percent, as well as recover from the unprecedented 2004-2005 hurricane seasons that saw eight storms make landfall in Florida.  He has also navigated the changing regulatory environment resulting from the Affordable Care Act implementation.

In addition to his role as the Florida Insurance Commissioner, he is a past President of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (“NAIC”).

Recognized as a national and international leader on insurance regulatory issues, Commissioner McCarty currently serves as the NAIC representative to the International Association of Insurance Supervisors‘ Executive and Technical Committees, the former which he co-vice-chairs.

Also being honored by FAIR tomorrow are Joseph Petrelli and Sharon Romano Petrelli, founder and co-founder of Ohio-based insurance rating agency Demotech, Inc..  Founded in 1983, the company reviews and rates more than four hundred regional and national insurers, including title underwriters and other specialty insurance carriers.

Other awards are being presented to Florida Senator Jeremy Ring and State  Representative Jake Raburn as “Outstanding Legislators,” and to the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners for its residential pool safety initiative.
