Statement by Governor Charlie Crist Regarding Selected Insurance Carriers for Cover Florida Plan

“After months of careful deliberation, today I am proud to announce the selection of six insurance companies to provide Floridians with Cover Florida health insurance products. Upon completion of the competitive negotiation process, the State has selected two statewide and four regional plans for inclusion in the Cover Florida program.

“The selected insurance companies have designed Cover Florida plan proposals that provide an affordable, quality health insurance product for Florida’s uninsured citizens and maximize consumer choice. All approved carriers will offer consumers at least two plans, one with catastrophic and hospital coverage, and one without. Each Cover Florida plan will include a robust set of benefits, including – at a minimum – coverage for preventive services, screenings, office visits, outpatient and inpatient surgery, urgent care, prescription drugs, durable medical equipment, and diabetic supplies.

“My administration has worked closely with the Agency for Health Care Administration and the Office of Insurance Regulation to ensure that Cover Florida exemplifies a comprehensive market-based strategy to address the needs of the uninsured in Florida. The selected plans contain no mandates for participation and no tax dollars are required to make the plans available to Floridians. These innovative health insurance products will be offered to Floridians who have been without insurance for at least six months and will be available for purchase in early 2009.

“I want to sincerely thank the companies that submitted proposals and congratulate the companies that were selected. Together, we will continue to work together to provide affordable health insurance solutions for Florida’s families. Soon nearly four million Floridians will have health insurance choices, many for the first time. I again thank the Florida Legislature for working together in a bipartisan manner to unanimously pass the Cover Florida plan.”
