Rep.Bryan Nelson pens snarky leter to Mike Fasano, suggests the Senator open his own insurance company

Republican Rep. Bryan Nelsonhas a suggestion for consumer advocate, neo-populist Mike Fasano: to go start his own insurance company.

“After reading your recent emails and studying your profound insights on the property insurance market, I had a brilliant epiphany about what your next venture should be,” Nelson, who is an insurance agent, writes, “…opening your own insurance company!”

Continues Nelson, “Yes, I believe it is time that the people of Florida had the freedom to choose to do business with an insurance company that is based on protecting “the little guy,” and not in making profits.”

Rep. Nelson’s tongue-in-cheek suggestion was presumably prompted by Sen. Fasano’s consistent advocacy on behalf of consumers in the face of ongoing efforts by insurance companies to see their markets de-regulated by state government.

Nelson doesn’t seem to appreciate Fasano’s efforts.

“For you, Senator Fasano, being directly in the mix of the property insurance industry should serve as the culmination of your tireless consumer advocacy and relentless pursuit of justice for your constituents,” writes Nelson. “Your frequent criticisms of insurance companies’ bloated profits should serve as the justifiable impetus to beat those shameful companies at their own game.”

Nelson’s suggestion to Fasano, “You could single-handedly change the face of the insurance industry while exposing the companies that have ruthlessly taken advantage of Floridians for far too long. Imagine Floridians being able to buy insurance from Florida’s best-known consumer champion and Floridian-friendly advocate – this could revolutionize the insurance industry!”

The full-text of Nelson’s letter to Fasano is below:

Dear Senator Fasano,

After reading your recent emails and studying your profound insights on the property insurance market, I had a brilliant epiphany about what your next venture should be- opening your own insurance company!

Yes, I believe it is time that the people of Florida had the freedom to choose to do business with an insurance company that is based on protecting “the little guy,” and not in making profits. It makes perfect sense: insurance, at its core is about managing life’s risks and protecting one’s assets. For you, Senator Fasano, being directly in the mix of the property insurance industry should serve as the culmination of your tireless consumer advocacy and relentless pursuit of justice for your constituents.

Your frequent criticisms of insurance companies’ bloated profits should serve as the justifiable impetus to beat those shameful companies at their own game. You could single-handedly change the face of the insurance industry while exposing the companies that have ruthlessly taken advantage of Floridians for far too long. Imagine Floridians being able to buy insurance from Florida’s best-known consumer champion and Floridian-friendly advocate- this could revolutionize the insurance industry!

The old saying that “Knowledge is power” would ring true with your business venture- after all, who is better prepared to beat the insurance companies at their own game than their biggest detractor? If you are truly committed to saving Floridians from those big mean insurance companies, you must carry your torch of righteousness and light the way for the insurance industry to put people before profits. With your extensive business acumen, you could probably run a lean, efficient company, charge the 2007 Citizens rates, adequately manage and protect your policyholders’ risks, and still refund premiums to your policyholders.

Show those insurance companies you do know better; give your constituents and Floridians everywhere the choice to put their trust- and their assets- in you. Florida eagerly awaits your grand entrance to the insurance industry- in fact, the Office of Insurance Regulation’s “IApply” can be accessed by clicking here or visiting https://apps.fldfs.com/wecaa/SignOn.aspx.

Thank you for your consideration of this suggestion. I look forward to the email from you announcing your new company in the property insurance market. When that day comes, Florida and its consumers will be better for it.

God Bless,

Rep. Bryan Nelson
