8,398 claims filed for Tropical Storm Fay

The four largest property insurers in the state have received a total of 8,398 claims so far for Tropical Storm Fay.

Citizens Property Insurance, the state-run company and the largest insurer of homes and condos in Florida, has seen 1,766 claims.

State Farm, the largest private insurer, says it has received 4,458 homeowners’ claims. It has also taken in 933 auto claims. Auto owners must have comprehensive coverage to have storm damage claims covered by their auto insurance policies.

Universal Property & Casualty reports 826 homeowners’ claims. And USAA, which provides coverage for the military and their families, says 1,348 claims have have been reported.

Between State Farm and USAA, they have taken 711 flood claims. While the claims are processed through the insurance companies, the damages are paid by the National Flood Insurance Program, which provides the coverage.
